Kuala Lumpur, 2 Aug: The Muslim Youth Movement of Malaysia (ABIM) Wednesday [2 August] called on the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) to use Article 8 under the Rome Statute to drag Israel to the International Criminal Court (ICC). ABIM International Vice-President Azril Mohd Amin said under the provision, actions could be taken against Israel including stopping its war crimes and pulling out its army from the region.
According to him, Article 8 of the Rome Statute gave the court powers to prevent war crime cases, particularly when they involved orchestrated war crimes. “We see Israel committing orchestrated war crimes by occupying Palestine provinces and encroaching Lebanon. We also condemn Israeli aggression against the innocent civilians,” he said at the media conference of ABIM and Global Peace Malaysia (GPM) Save Palestine Campaign here today.
Azril said the setting up of the ICC was endorsed by the United Nations at a conference in Rome, Italy, held from June 15 to July 13 in 1998. A total of 100 countries signed the Article 8, and Israel was one of them, signing it on 31 December 2000. ABIM demanded OIC to use the law provision to rescue the Palestinians and penalized Israel for its orchestrated criminal crimes.
GPM Deputy President Nur Anwar Hashim said GPM had sent a four-member initial observation team to the region on 22 July to 30 July to determine the situation there before sending the aid. In line with this, GPM asked the public to contribute to the West Asia Conflict Victims Fund to facilitate the purchase of medical supplies, food items and basic needs. [passage omitted]
