Toleransi, Kebebasan Bersuara di Barat Tidak Adil

Baru-baru ini isu kebebasan bersuara di Malaysia kembali menjadi hangat apabila seorang peguam hak asasi manusia yang juga pengasas bersama Lawyers for Liberty, Eric Paulsen mengeluarkan ungkapan “tweet” yang menuduh JAKIM mempromosi ekstremisme di dalam khutbah Jumaat di seluruh negara. Pihak berkuasa telah menjalankan siasatan terhadap tindakan beliau tersebut. Sama ada tindakan tegas berlandaskan undang-undang akan diambil ataupun tidak terhadap Eric, secara moralnya beliau telah mengguris perasaan umat Islam di Malaysia dan mengakibatkan prasangka buruk orang bukan Islam terhadap masyarakat Islam. Perbuatan beliau tidak dapat diterima sesiapapun yang berfikiran waras dan cintakan keharmonian beragama di sesebuah negara. Continue reading

Denounciation of the Bar Council for Defence of Eric Paulsen

In the Press Release of the President of the Malaysian Bar, Christopher Leong on 15 January 2015, he on behalf of the Bar Council asserted a defence of Eric Paulsen of Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) for his tweet “JAKIM is promoting extremism every Friday. Government needs to address that if serious about extremism in Malaysia” and urged the authorities to cease the use of the Sedition Act 1948. The Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (CENTHRA) and Concerned Lawyers for Justice (CLJ) denounce these stands. Continue reading

WE, the Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (CENTHRA) and Concerned Lawyers for Justice (CLJ) condemn in the strongest terms the highly provocative, outrageous as well as downright false tweet by Eric Paulsen of Lawyers For Liberty (LFL) suggesting that the Islamic Development Department of Malaysia (JAKIM) is responsible for fermenting extremism in its preparation of weekly Friday sermons for and on behalf of mosques throughout Malaysia. DUA peristiwa penting telah berlaku di Pertubuhan Bangsa-bangsa Bersatu (PBB) menjelang berlabuhnya tirai penutup tahun 2014. Pertama, Perhimpunan Agung PBB pada 29 Disember 2014 meluluskan resolusi menggesa Myanmar untuk memberikan ‘kewarganegaraan penuh’ kepada minoriti Rohingya Islam bertujuan membolehkan mereka bergerak bebas di seluruh negara tersebut. As we head into 2015

All of us long for a Human Rights environment that will be loving and inclusive bereft of millions of stateless or hungry people. Muslims, would add to that a wish that it be shariah-compliant; yet so often we are blamed for Human Rights abuses, as are other ethnic and religious groups, which is only a red herring and not the problem. The problem is first one of political and economic dysfunction. It would seem that most Human Rights difficulties derive ultimately from unjust economics and income inequality, as recognized by top commentators. Continue reading
