WE make reference to the Press Release of the President of the Malaysian Bar, Christopher Leong of the Bar Council on 11 February 2015 as well as the Press Release of the International Commission of Jurists on 10 February 2015 both of which concern the affirmation by the Federal Court of Malaysia on 10 February of the Court of Appeal decision on 8 March 2014 to convict Anwar Ibrahim of sodomy pursuant to Section 377B of the Penal Code of Malaysia.

Denounciation of the Bar Council for Defence of Eric Paulsen

In the Press Release of the President of the Malaysian Bar, Christopher Leong on 15 January 2015, he on behalf of the Bar Council asserted a defence of Eric Paulsen of Lawyers for Liberty (LFL) for his tweet “JAKIM is promoting extremism every Friday. Government needs to address that if serious about extremism in Malaysia” and urged the authorities to cease the use of the Sedition Act 1948. The Centre for Human Rights Research and Advocacy (CENTHRA) and Concerned Lawyers for Justice (CLJ) denounce these stands. Continue reading

New rally needed against opaque Bar Council elections

Few would have forgotten, especially amongst lawyers, the position of the Bar Council at the Extraordinary General Meeting called on 11 May 2012, when it passed a resolution that supported Bersih 3.0’s call for free and fair elections and condemned alleged “excessive” and “indiscriminate” police force against the rally organised by Bersih 3.0 earlier.
