Dr. Abdal Hakim Murad’s advice for the youth

The following is an extract of an interview with Shaykh Dr. Abdal Hakim Murad published earlier in the Fifteen21 Youth Magazine.

“If you are studying, especially religious subjects, you should read Imam al-Ghazali’s little book ‘O Youth’ (Ayyuha’l-Walad), in the excellent translation by the British Muslim scholar Tobias Mayer. He shows in very simple language how to study in a way that yields light, sincerity and blessing. My recent book Commentary on the Eleventh Contentions also tries to be uplifting for young people, dealing with modern political and intellectual questions in a hundred short sound bites.

“They are the best of us” – Commemorating the Battle of Badr

The following is from a mailing list I belong to. Please benefit and share widely.

On the 17th Ramaān we commemorate the Battle of Badr, which took place on that day in the second year of the Hijrah. It is one of the most important events in the history of the Ummah, and Allāh describes it as the Day of Discrimination.  Sayyidī al-abīb `Umar bin Hafī (may Allāh preserve him and benefit us by him) places great emphasis on commemorating it and marks the event by completing the Qur’ān in Tarawī on the eve of the 17th, after which there are big celebrations in Dār al-Muṣṭafā attended by thousands. The rest of the night is spent in prayer, remembrance and supplication, since prayers are answered when the Qur’ān is completed. Continue reading

An important Ramadhan reminder

[Note] The following article on “The 10 Benefits of Hunger” by Hujjat al-Islam Abu Hamid al-Ghazali is from a mailing list I belong to.

The Prophet (pbuh) said: “combat the self with hunger and thirst, for there is reward in that.”

One might perhaps ask: “wherefrom is this great virtue of hunger? What is the reason for it when there is but pain for the stomach and harmful suffering? And if it is to be so, then man should be granted greater rewards for allowing the self to suffer such harm in denying the flesh what it craves and forcing it to accept the objectionable and the like.”

Human Rights for LGBTs?

Al Qur’an makes it clear from the first Surah that the Shaitan will tempt and corrupt all human beings possible, since he is jealous that humankind is only made out of earthly mud while the Shaitan himself was one of the angels made out of fire. Allah SWT gives Shaitan permission to try any tricks he may wish, that in the end, those humans who test well in their behavior and refrain from performing mischief in the earth, will be protected and chosen by Allah SWT to enter Paradise when they die. Himpunan Keilmuan Muslim (HAKIM)

Behind terrorism, which is almost exclusively performed by younger Muslims, are various political, economic, and educational factors much in the news lately. What is not recognized is the collapse of gender wisdom in the proliferation of extreme terrorist acts.

“Homosexuality: Crime or Right?” was a recent IIUM forum (April 14, 2012) of such embarrassment that this widespread breakdown of gender philosophy was not even mentioned. Continue reading

Muslim NGO contribution to address the “LGBT” danger

In order to build an impact on the secular forces sure to be articulate in the coming 2013 Periodic Review of human rights situations in Malaysia and the other countries selected for participation in this particular session, we must be clear enough within ourselves what the secular agenda really is, and we must design a suitable strategy for countering and enlightening this agenda to allow an uncorrupted adherence to our values within the community of nations however we find it at this moment in human history. The world as it is, is not unlike the Ummah in Madinah itself at the time of the Prophet (s.a.w.), in which many religions and customs were represented and powerfully participant in the life of the Madinah community.
